Program Chile es Mar
Chile es Mar was created in 2011 as the outreach program of the Millennium Nucleus Center for Marine Conservation at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, led by Dr. Miriam Fernández. Since then, various initiatives have been designed and implemented, including guided tours, games, virtual training sessions, and in-person workshops. Educational materials, available for free download and use, have also been developed.
Together with development of scientific data bases that contribute to the planning of conservation and management of the marine coastal region, one of the priorities of the Núcleo Milenio Centro de Conservación Marina of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile is to spread scientific knowledge to the community, ultimately communicating the importance of the ocean in our society.
With this objective the program Chile es Mar was created and developed at the Estación Costera de Investigaciones Marinas (ECIM) with the idea of promoting a conscience for the preservation of Chile’s oceanic waters.
The program aims to provide information on the characteristics and peculiarities of the sea, highlighting it as one of the most productive marine systems in the world, which sustains various fisheries and shelters underwater mountains, forests, and deserts along the coastline.
However, this is also a marine system that has been tremendously impacted by human activity in recent decades and should be protected for future generations. Our educational program promotes recent scientific advances and invites communities to work together in the protection of the Chile’s vast oceanic territory.

The conservation of Chile’s marine resources and its biodiversity should be possible if scientific knowledge is combined with management practices, in order to create appropriate conservation strategies and accountability of all players in the decision-making process. The best strategy to encourage the concept of sustainability in the society is by informing and educating.
That is why our Project has developed guided visits at ECIM, where students can interact with marine organisms, participate in dynamic educational activities, and be exposed to scientific knowledge about the care and conservation of Chile’s marine living resources. In this manner, students will obtain a meaningful and significant learning experience that will influence future responsible decisions with respect to the ocean.

Family Visits
Besides school visits, the projects Chile es Mar, promotes community outreach activities and each year promotes family visits in order to publicize the work of researchers and history of the institution, as well as visits to the educational aquarium room ChileMar. Visit Our Virtual Room
La sala Chile es Mar es un espacio diseñado para que personas de diferentes edades aprecien la biodiversidad marina de Chile, mediante la observación de especies que habitan en nuestras costas.
Algunos de estos organismos viven en aguas poco profundas y podemos replicar las condiciones de su hábitat en un estanque sin mayores dificultades. ¡Podrás tener contacto directo con ellos si nos visitas en ECIM!
Otros organismos viven más profundo, en la zona mesofótica (donde apenas llega la luz necesaria para la fotosíntesis). Para presentarte a estos animales tenemos imágenes inéditas registradas por nuestros equipos de investigación.
